In 1958 Michael Bond wrote this imaginative story in a book called “A Bear Called Paddington”. He purchased the bear as a present for his wife and named the bear “Paddington” for the train station nearby.

In the beginning Michael wanted paddington to be born in Africa but since there are no bears in Africa, Paddington’s birthplace became Peru. Paddington Bear ended up in London after his old Aunt Lucy became too old to care for the young bear properly and she sent him to London with the message around his neck hoping that someone would see the little bear and want to adopt him.

It was evident that even though fiction, Michael Bond patterned the Brown family a little bit after the Bond family. The first book written with Paddington Bear as the main character led to six more collections between 1968 and 1981. Peggy Fortnum illustrated the first book and several of the subsequent books in pen and ink drawings. A Malayan bear, living at the London Zoo was the inspiration for her artwork.

Our favorite bear of all lives deep within the woods and that dear friend is, Winnie-the-Pooh. Winnie is a teddy bear character that is one of the most beloved of Disney. There was a dispute about the actual birthday of Winnie-the-Pooh. While some feel the birthday is 1921. However that is the time that the author, A.A. Milne, gave a teddy bear to his son, Christopher Robin, for his first birthday. That would make Winnie-the-Pooh 91 years old this year (2012).

Others feel the correct birthday of Pooh was in 1925, which was the year he started being called Winnie Pooh, not Edward Bear.” That would put Winnie at 87 years old. A.A. Milne settles the argument when he wrote in the House at Pooh corner a conversation between Pooh and Christopher Robin.

Pooh is asked by Christopher Robin to please always remember him, even if he lives an entire century. Pooh agrees, but still wants to know how old that would make him by then. Pooh is told by Christopher he would then be 99 years old. Sadly, Christopher Robin only made it to 75, but nevertheless Pooh kept his promise and never forgot him. In fact, Pooh will live in the hearts of children forever just like he remember Christopher Robin!

The Beginnings of Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh got his unusual name from two live animals familiar to the Milne family. The two names came from a bear called Winnie and a Swan named Pooh that lived on a lake near by. It’s not clear why Christopher Robin changed the name of his bear from Edward Bear to Winnie-Pooh.

The Pooh stories got started by Alan Milne as he told them to Christopher Robin. Alan, once asked by a publisher for a Christmas story, Alan’s wife, Daphne, told him as well to write a new bedtime story about Winnie-Pooh. The story was so popular it became the first chapter of the book, “Winnie-the-Pooh.”

There was another book called “When We Were Young” and it introduced all the neighbors of Pooh bear: Eeyore, the gloomy donkey, Piglet, the very timid, stuttering baby pig, Kanga, the warmhearted kangaroo mom and Roo, her son. Tigger, Rabbit and Owl were later created by Milne because they were not a part of Christopher Robin’s nursery. Pooh and friends were loved all over the world and 150,000 copies of the book were sold in 1926 alone.

The first two months after the next book, “Now We Are Six” came out in England it sold over 94,000 copies. The final book written in 1928 included our favorite character Tigger and had an astounding 130 printings.

Why Everyone Will Always Love Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie is a true friend who is willing to help his friends in any way he can. He is always seen on his way to melancholy Eeyore’s house or one of his other friends to help them out of a dilemma.
